Twenty-five years ago, SC Supply Company started with a simple mission: provide contractors and municipalities with quality traffic safety equipment backed by knowledgeable service. A quarter-century later, that mission hasn't changed—but our ability to serve customers has grown in ways we never imagined. Today, we're celebrating 25 years of partnerships, projects, and the privilege of helping keep workers and communities safe. Here's our story.
The Early Years: Building Trust One Project at a Time
Starting a traffic safety supply company meant earning trust in an industry where equipment quality directly impacts worker safety. We didn't have decades of reputation—we had to build it with every order, every delivery, every phone call. Those early customers took a chance on us. They could have ordered from established suppliers with longer track records. Instead, they chose SC Supply Company because we listened, we learned their specific needs, and we delivered exactly what we promised, when we promised it. That foundation of keeping commitments became our business model. Twenty-five years later, some of those early customers are still with us—and they're now working with the second generation of their own companies.
Earning WBE Certification: Opening Doors and Building Partnerships
Becoming a Women's Business Enterprise (WBE) certified company marked a significant milestone in our journey. WBE certification opened opportunities to work with organizations committed to supplier diversity, but it also came with responsibility. We don't just carry WBE certification—we've worked to represent what it means. Supporting diversity in procurement creates opportunities throughout the supply chain. When agencies and contractors include WBE suppliers in their projects, they're investing in broader economic participation and business innovation. Our WBE certification has connected us with incredible partners: government agencies prioritizing diversity, prime contractors building inclusive supply chains, and other diverse businesses working toward similar goals. These relationships pushed us to grow our capabilities and expand our product lines to serve larger, more complex projects.
The Products We've Grown With
Our product line tells the story of industry evolution and customer needs over 25 years.
Traffic Cones: From Basic to Specialized
We started with standard orange traffic cones—the same ones everyone else sold. But customers kept asking for variations: different heights for different road speeds, specialized colors for utility marking, USA-made options for government projects, collapsible designs for emergency vehicles. Today we stock everything from 2 & 5-inch mini cones to 12-inch parking cones up to 36-inch MUTCD-compliant highway cones, in colors ranging from standard orange to specialty blues, white, yellow, pink, red, and limes. We partnered with manufacturers like Lakeside Plastics who share our commitment to American manufacturing and consistent quality. JBC Safety Plastics became another trusted partner, offering reliable performance and excellent value that contractors depend on for their everyday traffic control needs.
Plasticade Partnership: Made in USA Quality
Finding Plasticade transformed our barricade and channelizing device business. Here was an American manufacturer producing MUdct and MASH-approved equipment that actually outlasted cheaper imports. The quality difference was obvious—Plasticade barricades still functioned after impacts that destroyed competitors' products. We became committed to promoting Made in U SA products not just for patriotic reasons, but because the quality genuinely served our customers better. Contractors replacing broken import barricades every few months spend more on labor and materials than the Plasticade premium costs upfront. The math simply works in favor of quality. Over the years, we've expanded our Plasticade partnership to include traffic drums, vertical panels, ADA pedestrian barriers, and specialized channelizing equipment. When customers ask for work zone equipment recommendations, Plasticade tops our list because we've seen how it performs in real-world conditions.
Flexstake Delineators: Innovation in Highway Safety
The flexible delineator concept seemed almost too simple when we first encountered Flexstake products. Posts that bend 90 degrees from vehicle impact and return to vertical position? It sounded gimmicky. Then we saw the performance data. Flexstake delineators withstanding 30-100 more impacts than rigid markers. DOT and FAA approval. Installation and maintenance cost savings that paid back the premium within months. We added Flexstake to our lineup and watched contractors reduce their delineator replacement schedules from quarterly to annually—or longer. Highway crews loved the reduced maintenance exposure in live traffic. Airport operations appreciated FAA-approved markers that aircraft equipment couldn't damage.
Expanding Beyond Core Products
Customer needs drove us beyond traffic cones and barricades into comprehensive traffic control solutions: Safety apparel and high-visibility clothing for worker protection Warning lights and message boards for enhanced visibility Temporary pavement marking products Specialty items like collapsible cones for emergency vehicles ADA-compliant pedestrian barriers for accessible work zones Each addition came from listening to customers describe their challenges and finding quality solutions that actually solved problems rather than just filling catalog space.
Industry Changes We've Navigated Together
Twenty-five years brought significant changes to traffic safety regulations and best practices.
MUTCD Evolution and Compliance
The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices has evolved considerably since we started. New reflectivity standards, updated work zone requirements, enhanced pedestrian protection mandates—each change required us to update our product knowledge and help customers navigate compliance. We invested heavily in understanding MUTCD requirements so we could guide customers through specification changes. When contractors call asking which cone height their project requires, we can reference the specific MUTCD section that answers their question. That expertise becomes particularly valuable when project specifications and bidding deadlines collide.
ADA Requirements in Work Zones
Americans with Disabilities Act requirements extending to construction work zones created new compliance challenges for contractors. Maintaining accessible pedestrian routes during construction isn't optional—it's federal law. We responded by partnering with Plasticade to offer ADA-compliant pedestrian barrier systems designed specifically for work zones. These weren't general-purpose barriers adapted for accessibility—they were engineered from the start to meet ADA requirements while functioning in construction environments. Helping contractors understand and meet ADA obligations became part of our service model. Work zone accessibility isn't just a legal requirement—it's the right approach to inclusive community infrastructure.
Technology and Customer Service
The internet transformed how customers research and purchase traffic safety equipment. Early in our history, customers called for catalogs and product information. Today, they research online before ever contacting a supplier. We adapted by building a comprehensive website with detailed product specifications, MUTCD guidance, and educational content. But we never lost the personal service approach that built our business. The phone still rings daily with customers who've researched online but want to talk through their specific application with someone knowledgeable. That combination—comprehensive online information plus accessible personal service—serves customers who want both convenience and expertise.
The Customers Who Built Our Business
Our success reflects the trust customers placed in us over 25 years.
Contractors Who Became Partners
Some customers have worked with us for 20+ years. They've grown from small operations to major contractors, and we've grown alongside them. Their early trust when they didn't have to give it means everything. These long-term customers don't just buy products—they collaborate with us on project challenges, share feedback that improves our service, and refer other contractors who become part of our extended business family.
Municipalities Building Safer Communities
Government agencies face unique procurement requirements and budget constraints. WBE certification helped us participate in municipal projects, but delivering consistent quality and responsive service kept those relationships strong. Municipal customers often order smaller quantities more frequently than contractors. That requires flexible service and quick response—we built our operation to accommodate that need because serving communities is part of our mission.
DOT Agencies and Highway Safety
State DOT specifications are demanding for good reason—highway safety equipment must perform flawlessly because lives depend on it. DOT relationships require absolute reliability: right products, correct specifications, on-time delivery, complete documentation. Meeting those standards made us better at serving all customers. The discipline required for DOT work elevated our entire operation.
What Hasn't Changed in 25 Years
While products and technology evolved, our core approach remained constant: Answering the Phone: We still believe in accessible personal service. When customers call, knowledgeable people answer—not phone trees or offshore call centers. Product Knowledge: We invest in understanding not just what products do, but when to use them. Customers need guidance, not just catalog specifications. Honest Recommendations: If a less expensive product serves a customer's need as well as a premium option, we recommend the less expensive product. Short-term profit isn't worth long-term relationship damage. Keeping Commitments: Promised delivery dates, quoted prices, estimated shipping costs—we honor our commitments even when it costs us margin. Reliability builds the trust that sustains 25-year relationships. Quality Over Price: We've always prioritized quality products from reputable manufacturers over chasing the lowest cost. Customers remember product failures long after they forget initial savings. This all adds up to our basic princple of busness: top quality products and excellent customer service all at a fair price.
Looking Forward: The Next 25 Years:
Traffic safety technology continues evolving. Smart work zones with connected equipment, enhanced retroreflective materials, sustainable product innovations—the next quarter-century will bring changes we can't fully anticipate. What we can promise is the same commitment that guided our first 25 years: quality products, knowledgeable service, honest dealing, and the recognition that our success depends entirely on our customers' success. We're honored to have served this industry for 25 years. To every customer who trusted us with their projects, every manufacturer partner who supplied quality products, every worker who stayed safe using equipment we supplied—thank you for making this journey possible.
