According to the MUTCD manual "The symbol or letter designation should be positioned to the left of the street name. The Street Name sign shall be retroreflective or illuminated to show the same shape and similar color both day and night. The legend and background shall be of contrasting colors." Street Name Signs are typically around 7-8 feet above ground, these heights insure better visibility and make it harder to vandalize the signs. The MUTCD now recommends that street signs be high intensity reflective and lettered using upper-case and lower-case letters, as always check with your local or state requirements.
